Liverpool v Man City: Match preview
Liverpool v Manchester City is one of the most eagerly anticipated Champions League quarter-finals in recent memory – and it’s not hard to see why.
Just consider the rich and diverse range of narrative strands framing the tie.
It’s Jurgen Klopp v Pep Guardiola. Mohamed Salah v Kevin de Bruyne. Raheem Sterling back on Merseyside. The battle of arguably the two most entertaining sides in the country right now.
The list could go on. In short, it’s a script-writer’s dream.
What better backdrop, then, than a revved-up Anfield as England’s two remaining Champions League pugilists clamber between the ropes for the first round of what promises to be a thrilling white-knuckle slugfest.
In the red corner: Liverpool, the European aristocrats with the scent of a sixth crown firmly in their nostrils and the only team to beat City in the Premier League so far this season.
And in the blue corner: City, the swashbuckling, record-breaking Premier League champions-elect for whom this competition has become a holy grail since owner Sheikh Mansour’s arrival in 2008.
Their two previous meetings in 2017-18 featured 12 goals, with the Reds’ madcap 4-3 win at Anfield in January providing a measure of revenge for the 5-0 chasing they suffered at the Etihad Stadium in September.
European knock-out first legs tend to be more low-key, but it would be no surprise if Wednesday’s latest collision ignited in similar fashion.
Klopp, for one, admitted he is expecting sparks to fly.
“If I would have had the choice to watch a Champions League game on Wednesday, I would watch this one,” he said.
“It is about tactics, but there will be fire in the game. So that’s cool.
“Did we think before the first [league game against City] we would lose 5-0? No. Did we think before the second we would win 4-3? No. Do we know we have a chance? Yes. But they are the favourites.
“At specific moments I think we are on a similar level but they have been much more consistent and that’s why they are about 20 points higher in the league.
“I have no problem with respecting that. But we all know that in this game, it doesn’t mean too much. We see our chance but we know it will be unbelievably difficult.”
